Preparing Your Child for Nursery: A Gentle Guide

Start Early

Begin talking about nursery 2-3 weeks before. Read books about going to school. Drive past the nursery and point it out.

Build Independence

  • Practice putting on shoes
  • Let them eat lunch independently
  • Encourage water bottle use
  • Practice goodbye routines

The First Day

  1. Keep the morning routine calm
  2. Pack a comfort item (small toy, family photo)
  3. Keep the goodbye short and confident
  4. Don't sneak away — always say goodbye

Managing Separation Anxiety

It's completely normal for children (and parents!) to feel anxious. Most children settle within 2-3 weeks.

What Mums Say

"The first week was hard, but by week three he was running in without looking back." — Layla, mum of 2

"I cried more than my daughter! But the nursery staff were amazing." — Rachel, first-time mum
